PREP@UNM Data

An NIH PREP postbaccalaureate program has been nearly continuously funded through the UNM Department of Biology from 2007–2026. It has successfully trained 65 scholars in the last 10 years (including the current cohort), of whom over 70% were accepted into graduate programs (not including the current cohort). Most of the scholars not in grad programs are, nevertheless, in medical careers.  Moreover, scholars from previous rounds of funding are now starting to matriculate with PhDs (~25 have finished to date) and enter into the scientific workforce conducting cutting-edge biomedical research leading to improvements in human thriving.  The PREP program at UNM has historically been the only PREP postbacc training program in the Mountain West and one of only two in the Southwest Region.

We count the current PREP program at UNM an exceptional success.  We believe PREP@UNM will continue to provide an exceptional, unique experience for deserving students lacking in preparedness to ready themselves for the rigors of high-end biomedical and related graduate research and will contribute to a scientific research workforce well prepared for the challenges of a future of developing health knowledge in our dynamic world.
